The Gift was created by German conceptual artist Jochen Gerz. During the exhibit at SFMOMA, Gerz set up a photo studio on the third floor of the museum landing, where visitors were invited to have a black-and-white headshot taken. The headshots were then printed, framed and given to the participators. Unexpectedly, each participator was given a portrait of someone else to display at home or offices. The act of exchange not only reinforced the name of the exhibit and extended the wall of the museum, but also posted the question: who is the real receipts of “the gift”?
